This module first examines various policies, ranging from EU policies to regional policies that have been implemented to promote the emergence of sustainable cities. It will focus especially on the growing interaction between town and country planning tools, such as the Regional Spatial Development Perspective (RSDP) in the Walloon Region and the Spatial Structure Plan for Flanders (RSV) in the Flemish Region, and aids for a sustainable cities policy.

• The Leipzig Charter on Sustainable European Cities (2007): strategy, key issues and positioning;
• Sustainable cities policy: constants and breaches with respect to previous provisions;
• The status of engineering and technology in the context of renewed interest in the territorial issue;
• Mobility and regional cohesion policies at the start of the 21st century.
